Light up space with DIY lanterns

It’s patio season and time to enjoy the outdoors from the comfort of your backyard. Whether relaxing alone or entertaining guests, lighting is a key element to ensure that warm summer nights aren’t cut short.

Lanterns serve a dual purpose. They are a beautiful way to bring some interest to your backyard but also provide ambient lighting to your outdoor oasis. Lanterns also support the design trend around Danish hygge (pronounced hue-guh), which is about creating cosiness, conviviality and comfort and promoting well-being.

Lanterns come in all shapes, sizes and styles. The best part is they’re perfect for painting, which makes it an easy DIY project to spruce up your space.

1. Pick

Find one or more new or used lanterns, picking different shapes and sizes you find interesting. Select a Krylon spray paint in your favourite colour and finish from your local Co-op Home Centre.

2. Prep

Clean the lanterns thoroughly with soap and water. Allow the lanterns to dry and tape off, or remove, any glass to protect it from being painted.

3. Spray

Shake the can of spray paint for at least one to two minutes before spraying to ensure the paint is evenly distributed. In a well-ventilated area and overtop a drop cloth, spray the lantern in smooth, even strokes with slight overlap. Apply additional coats as needed.

4. Dry

Let your lanterns dry before handling. Drying can take 10 to 25 minutes, depending on the type of paint you use. Please see package instructions for complete details.

When it’s dry, it’s time to display your masterpieces. Place them in sets as a table centerpiece or stagger them throughout your space. Then light some candles or place some battery-operated LEDs inside to add magic and enjoy the gentle glow of your yard.
