Materials Checklist

  • Sea glass paint
  • Your glass material selection
  • Solvent-based cleaner
  • Sandpaper or wire brush
  • Gloves and mask
  • Old towel or rag

How To Do It

Step One: Choose your glass. Almost any old glass will do as your creativity begins with the choice of glass. Do not limit yourself to just bottles and jars. You can transform an old vinegar container into a vintage perfume bottle. You can work with glass lamps, glass jewelry boxes, candleholders or candy dishes. Transform an old vase of textured or patterned glass with a refurbished, layered sea glass effect.

Step Two: Start by thoroughly cleaning the glass. Running it through the dishwasher will do the trick.

Step Three: Remove all labels or stickers by using any solvent-based cleaner. Make sure to use gloves and a rag to protect your hands and get the best results.

Step Four: Lightly scuff the glass to give it more of that aged character look and to help the paint stick. Try sandpaper or a wire brush. Now you are ready to apply the sea glass paint. Remember, this is a spray paint, so it should be applied in a well-ventilated space, ideally outside. Make sure to wear a mask.

To achieve the most lustrous effect, layer on the paint in light coats with a delicate touch, holding the can at least 10 - 12 inches away from the glass. If you want to deepen the colour, keep layering until the colour is what you are looking for. Wait for each coat to dry before applying the next layer. Each coat will only take a few minutes to dry. For more application tips, make sure you read the instructions on the can. There is lots of helpful information on the label.

Step Five: Last but not least, place your finished piece of sea glass where it rightfully belongs – not gathering dust on your basement shelf, but showcased on your mantelpiece for everyone to enjoy.
