Refurbishing everyday items with spray paint

With some spray paint, primer and a few good ideas, you can have completely new decor. Remember to find a safe space to spray your projects -- outdoors or a well-ventilated area is key to avoid inhaling fumes. Put down an old drop cloth to catch any erratic spray paint.

Lace Stencils on Furniture

You can use lace or doilies as a fabric stencil. You’ll want to use this method on a flat surface where you can stretch and fasten the lace. For that reason, furniture works really well for this. Fasten your lace stencil to the surface of your choosing then spray paint over top. Keep in mind you can only use your lace once. Then, once the paint is dry, lift your lace material off. You’ll be left with a spray-painted lace pattern on your piece.

Tin Cans

The trick to painting on tin is to make sure the surface is free from any adhesive residue from labels or oxidization. Scrub your tin cans with steel wool to remove any debris, then spray them with a primer. Once that’s complete, spray them completely with the colour of your choice. For tin can herb gardens, we love metallic options like the Krylon Shimmer Metallic line of spray paints. They can be used as flower pot centrepieces or herb planters.

Terracotta Flower Pots

You can give your potted plants an upgrade by spray-painting the terracotta pots you hold them in. Keep in mind that clay terracotta pots are very porous — if you get them wet while cleaning them be sure to let them dry out for a full 24 hours. Before you start painting them, apply a water sealant to the inside of your pots. This can extend the life of your plants.

Bathroom Supplies

Mismatched bathroom supplies like your countertop soap dispenser and toothbrush holder are an easy fix with spray paint. After you clean your supplies, wipe them down with rubbing alcohol to ensure there’s nothing on the surface. Then, spray your pieces — for a timeless, elegant colour scheme, try black with rose gold accents. If you are doing two colours, tape off your edges before spraying.

Sea Glass

The upcycled sea glass technique we cover in Turn Boring to Brilliant can be taken one step further with elastic bands to create a geometric pattern. Simply wrap the elastic bands around your glass bottle before you begin spray-painting and remove them when the paint is dry. You’ll be left with patterned sea glass!

Table Fan

Turn your dusty old fan into a trendy piece worthy of your mantel. To start, clean your fan and wipe it down with rubbing alcohol. Then, take the wire cage off the front. We like spray painting the wire cage and the base different colours. If you’re planning to do this, wrap the entire base and blades with tinfoil before you spray the cage. Depending on how hard your fan blades are to remove, it might be best to leave those as is. Let the paint dry, then wrap the cage and blades in tinfoil and spray the base.
