Working with drones on the jobsite

Drones might seem like they don’t have a place on the jobsite, but they are becoming increasingly popular among contractors. Many companies are beginning to see the benefits that a drone can provide, including cost savings, enhanced safety and planning ease. A drone can be an excellent investment for your business and help you remain competitive.

Planning

Planning any project is always a daunting task. However, if done thoroughly at the beginning, it can make the rest of your project run smoothly. A drone can help capture a bird’s-eye view of the jobsite that will help you identify any safety issues or possible challenges that might require additional resources. Many companies are also using drones to help clients gain a better understanding of the plot before construction begins.

Savings

Depending on the quality of drone you choose to purchase, it can be a large upfront cost, but in the long run it can save you money. For instance, drones can provide savings on labour, removing the need for a human surveyor or an inspector. Drones not only help you save on labour, but they can help identify whether or not your project is on track and if you need to reallocate resources.

Progress updates

Drones are an easy way to show your client progress on construction without them having to routinely travel to the jobsite. For residential construction, it is possible to live stream the footage directly to clients. This makes it easier for the new homeowners to identify any changes or concerns they may have before it’s too late. After the project is completed, progress and completed pictures can be used in marketing materials to gain additional business.

Safety

With your drone, you and your safety manager can survey the site for potential dangers and hazardous materials. Noticing an unstable structure or an employee who is not following proper safety protocol with a drone can help you correct these mistakes before an accident occurs. A drone can also be an excellent tool in an unsafe area without having to put your employees at risk.

While surveying the safety concerns on the jobsite, ensure that the operation of your drone is safe. Transport Canada outlines operator protocols that must be followed. These include:

  • Fly only during daylight
  • Fly in good weather conditions
  • Always keep the drone in sight
  • Respect the privacy of others
  • Do not fly close to airports, moving cars or reach heights more than 90 metres
